Carrie Darline Torrence Shepherd ~ 1935-2005

Darline was born May 10, 1935 in Stephens to the late Jesse Torrence and Etta Mullins Torrence. She united with Saint Stephens Baptist Church at the age of 12. Darline later became a member of Friendship Baptist Church where she served as deaconess, choir member and financial secretary and also served as secretary of the Columbia District Missionary Baptist Association. Darline was a graduate of Carver High School in Stephens; graduate of Philander Smith College in 1956; graduate of University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with a master’s degree in 1958; employed with Walker Schools for 41 years where she worked as a secretary, bookkeeper teacher, and principal, and in 1997 she retired as superintendent. In 1993, Darline was appointed to the Southern Arkansas University board of trustees for a five year term. Her community service included serving on the Abilities Unlimited Board, the Columbia County Library Board and Habitat for Humanity. She was a golden member of Alpha Kappa Alpha and was serving as basileus of the Phi Zeta Omega Chapter. |
